Larophiles may be interested in a recent thread and images on Surfbirds regarding a Herring Gull (sp) 3rd-winter showing some mixed characters of argenteus/smithsonianus with the conclusion erring toward argenteus with a very well defined tail band. Thread can be found here.

New Link in the sidebar to a Swedish Gull Blog called truthjalpen, which loosely translates as 'Gull Aid'. the images are fantastic and the content fascinating, detailed and knowledgeable but I guess this is what you would expect from Hans Larsson and Jorgen Bernsmo. That's right him, the one that did the awesome plates for the Helm Gulls book.It's only been running three months but it's a must visit if your interested in large white headed gulls. Go, now, revel. Oh don't be fooled when you arrive and its all in Swedish, on the sidebar they have added the Google Translate widget to turn it into English or any other language you care to use.

'Baltic' Gull

Stef Mcelwee has kindly allowed me to post a series of shots of a putative juvenile 'Baltic' Gull taken in Lincolnshire on 2nd September 2009. It is an interesting individual that shows many of the key features attributable to fuscus at this age such as the slender build, very pale head, breast & belly, dark greater coverts with whiteish tips and cold grey appearance.

Adult, 3km off Tynemouth, 30 July.

All of the next images are of a juvenile Lesser Black-backed Gull seen on a pelagic trip 3-5km off the Tyne on 30 July. Whilst the light conditions were not good the bird was considered to be a very dark individual by two experienced observers. It caused a number of moments of confusion as it was dark enough to be mistaken for dark phase Arctic Skua at a distance.

Black Headed Gull - Larus ridibundus

As a diversion I have begun to take some images of gulls I come across here in Northumberland.

Here is a selection of Black Headed Gull Larus ridibundus taken 25 Feb 2009 at QE2 Country Park.

One point of interest, note the bird in the foreground on the three bird shot. I suspect this is a third calendar year bird for two reasons the bare part colours are slightly paler more orange/red than red and the state of the primary moult is slightly behind that of the 'adult' gulls.

Note the variation in bill colour on these two birds the one in the foreground looking almost black at a distance although closer inspection reveals it is in fact dark red/purple with a black tip.
